The idea of patronage goes back thousands of years. Arts, which are difficult to measure by most standards, are an intrinsic and crucial part of civilization. Finding ways to support the arts, without impeding their integrity has been a problem for centuries. Crowd funding on a voluntary basis, seems to me, to be the purest distillation of artist and audience reaching a mutual arrangement. There is no middle man, no idea holder, no gatekeeper. Just the artist, the work, and the people willing to pay for more of it.
